Make you Windows 7 Boot and Shutdown Faster

It's very good news if your laptop and PC have slow booting and shutdown, so simply put, this little collection of tools will help you to gain control on quicker start times, internet confirmation, shut down times as well as throwing in some performance improvements.  As a bit of a start though, lets discuss two of the largest causes of a lengthy boot time on a computer, automatic updating and virus programs.  A great many programs leave files in your startup folder and automatically set themselves to automatic updating on installation.  Automatic updating can increase your boot time by 6-60 seconds, and more, depending on what you have installed.

For example, I use a great optimization utility called Advanced System Care which does a great job keeping my system clean.  It only get used when I choose so I never considered that it would be the cause of a 7-8 second delay in my start time.  It turns out that, in the programs Options menu, there are two check boxes, one for starting the program automatically at start up and the other for automatic updating.  I simply unchecked them and got that time back but who knew right?

The other consideration that I mention has to do with finding the right virus program.  I like freeware myself and have had the opportunity to check the start times of four programs in the past while.  Was I surprised to find that the best program started in the least amount of time was 5-6 seconds while at least two others chocked 10-15 seconds on to the boot time.

A. Configuration File Adjustment

The Configuration File can be found by pressing the WinKey + letter ’R’ simultaneously which will bring up the Run command. From there, type ‘msconfig’ into the box and press enter. While here we are going to perform a few changes to decrease our boot time:
Check  No GUI Boot which will stop the colorful opening ceremonies of the software and save you precious seconds at start up as will these others;
Reduce the Delay time to 3 seconds;
Choose Advanced options and select 2 for the number of processors if you are fortunate to have such; and
Click on OK followed by Apply and then agree to restart your computer.

B. Remove any Unused and Unneeded Services

Windows 7 running services can potentially be the main cause for slow start and performance in a computer system. Many of the services are never used by the computer as the general settings are meant to cover any number of computers and their configurations. On first seeing the Service Applet, the columns will show the name of each service, description, status and start-up type. The user needs to carefully consider the properties of each one to determine if it needs to be running or not. The safest method of approach is to set services to manual, when unsure, rather than to disable them.

So, simply press WinKey + ‘R’ to again bring up the Run Command and type in ‘services.msc’ before pressing OK. Double clicking on any service will help in determining if it is useful or not as well as changing its properties.

Some services that start automatically, by default, that can be disabled are:

• Computer Browser
• Distributed Link Tracking Client
• IKE and AuthIP IP Keying Modules
• Offline Files
• Remote Registry
• Tablet PC Input Service (If you are not using a tablet)
• Windows Error Reporting

You can experiment carefully with some services and I would suggest only a few at a time and then return if something doesn't work as planned or there are adverse results.

C. Eliminate Unneeded Start Up Programs

Start Up programs, as with Windows Services, have the ability to slow your system down a great deal. Start Up programs are a bit more obvious to the typical user however. Many software programs, on installation, embed files within the Start-up folder that are running behind the scenes needlessly. Quick Time is famous for this as is MS Office, however, MSN Messenger and the many communications programs that start automatically are a better example.  My best suggestion is to choose quicker boot times rather than starting frequently used programs automatically.

To examine your Startup, press WinKey + ‘R’ and type ‘msconfig’ and OK. From there select Startup and examine the running files. Again, determining what you can shut down may take a bit of work, however, my policy is that if I can start it when I select the program, there is no need for its files to be running all the time and slowing my system.

D. Remove Unused Fonts

I have just counted and was astounded to learn that there were a total of 708 fonts installed on my computer by Windows 7 taking up a whopping ½ GB of space, all but three of which I may never use. Windows loads each and every one of these fonts at boot up and must keep track of them, thus slowing your system. Feel free to cut down on the total number by simply deleting them. Go to Start Menu/Control Panel/Fonts.

E. Get Quicker Internet Confirmation

There is a quick trick to getting your internet to confirm quicker on boot. Press Winkey + ‘R’, type in ‘services.msc', double click and disable Workstation.

PRECAUTION: This tweak is not advisable if your system is located within a network or workstation environment as it will affect the environment itself.

F. Speed Up Your Shut Down Time

Windows 7 allows you to control your shut down time and allows it to be set from instantaneous to a 20 second delay. In considering this, your work habits need to be thought of and whether or not there is data being saved on exit. My shut down time is set at 2 seconds which I find a perfect setting as I hate waiting for a computer to shut down. We need to go into the Registry for this one so buckle up!
Press Winkey +’R’ and type ‘Regedit’ which brings you to the Registry Editor;
Follow” HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control and then look to the right to find WaitToKillServiceTimeOut and double click on it. You can enter a value from 2 to 20000, each value representing a millisecond. Two seconds would be 2000; and
Again click OK and then simply exit the program; it will be saved automatically.

5 Best Free File Copy Software

FastCopy:- FastCopy is my choice for the best file copy manager. When it comes to stability and speed, FastCopy gave me consistent results and beat every other manager in the running by several seconds. I also noted that during the transfer, even with the 64MB cache that it used, I was still not seeing a significant jump in resource usage. My RAM usage stayed consistently low throughout the entire transfer. The program is excellent which made it my top choice of the file managers I tested.
It also includes shell integration with the program and x64 capabilities. The program can also be run without being installed which is a very nice touch if you only need it for certain tasks. It also includes an installer for shell integration and for use as your default copier. It will not override your Windows file copier even when installed.
There are a lot of great things about this program but I cannot give this program a 10/10 for the following reasons. First, the uninstalling utility would probably be confusing for the average user since you have to enter the C:\Program Files\FastCopy folder in order to run setup again and choose to uninstall the program. With that said it did not show up in the "Uninstall Program" section of Windows 7 Control Panel which would be the optimal place for the program to be uninstalled. Secondly, shell integration must be configured via the "Options" menu and in order to choose what FastCopy options you would like added to the right-click menu since it does not automatically override your Windows copier.
These to me are minor gripes as the shell extensions added manually are excellent and you can even choose to hide the transfer window in the system tray and hover your mouse over to see the transfer speeds. Also, built into the program is a file wiping utility that performs up to three passes over the file it is deleting for those wanting secure deletion of their files. A big thank you to the commenters for bringing this program, and its benchmarks, to my attention.

Unstoppable Copier :- The next program that I tested was Unstoppable Copier. This one wins hands down in the reliability category. Not only does it transfer faster than the normal Windows copier, it is also able to recover partial files from damaged media or corrupt areas of a hard disk drive. This program is not a miracle worker but I gave it several scratched DVDs that were denied by my Windows copier and it was able to get me a complete backup of the files on the disk. I am very impressed by the software and its uses.I do not believe it is the intention of the project to do so, but I think this could be an even better program if it was able to be used in place of the Windows copier. It is portable and installable but both versions must be launched in order to do file transfers. The output of the program is outstanding and gives you a very good idea of which files have copied successfully and which files will be re-attempted. With its unique ability to recover damaged files, this copying program is the most reliable of the programs I tested.

TeraCopy :- I recently used the 2.22 version of TeraCopy. I've seen a lot of complaints about stability with this program and so I decided to push it to the limits. Full on 21.7GB transfer of small files, pausing and resuming of said files, follow-up verification of the total transfer, and killing and re-starting of the same transfer. I will say that these features worked as intended on my setup which is Windows 7 x64 Home Premium.
While this program is a beta, the features I tested performed as they should on my setup. My results are as individual as they come because obviously I cannot account for every variation but the method I used involved TeraCopy as the only program running. Even when I wasn't 'harassing' it by pausing and resuming, my setup is RAID 0, I tried copying small files and one ridiculously large file several times. Each time it did exactly what I asked it to do. The file verification also reassured me that everything transferred correctly even if I did manually verify later. I personally switch file copiers because I want something faster and more reliable than the Windows copier. In this respect as a Windows copier replacement TeraCopy still shines. I will have some people I know test this program and see if they run into any problems that perhaps I could not. But I still have to say that this is the most actively developed and impressively integrated file copier out right now.
The fact that they have a freeware version that works with Windows 8 x64 (seriously, look at their page) and smooth total integration still makes this one of the best file copiers I've used to date. Which is why it remains a contender for the top spot. If a new release ends up equalling FastCopy on speed, resource usage and stability, then you all will be seeing a new top spot recommendation from me.

SuperCopier is a system tool that aims to significantly reduce time when you are copying or moving files. It definitely comes in handy when you are dealing with large files, and when Windows' copy and cut functions are simply not enough anymore.
After the quick installation is complete, you can access SuperCopier in the system tray. Unfortunately, the application does not integrate in the context menu, so you have to select "new thread" every time you want to use SuperCopier.In New Thread you drag and drop the file you wish to copy or move, and select the destination folder.The interface will always be on top of other programs, except when it minimize to tray. It notifies you when a task is complete, but it will not say how much time it took (just the speed).The Thread List option didn't work in our case. We're assuming that's where you can schedule files for copying or moving.In addition, you can configure SuperCopier in matter of appearance (foreground, background, text and border colors), speed limit for copying and moving, time to wait between two retries, and others. Our test was done on a 4.94Gb folder, and run on Windows 7. In the case of SuperCopier vs Windows, Windows won! SuperCopier took 4 minutes and 11 seconds to copy the file, while Windows took only 3 minutes and 14 seconds. But CPU and memory resources are less used by SuperCopier.

WinMend:- WinMend File Copy is a free and excellent batch file copy tool. Based on extensive testing, and by constantly maximizing the potential of the operating system, WinMend File Copy developed a unique key technique that makes up for the inadequacy of the system’s default copy functionality and increases the speed of file copy to be 3 times of the system default. It can resume the interrupted replication and display a list of failed files, such as files occupied by other applications. It is the best help you can ever get to speed up system backup. Supports Language: English, Hungarian, Russian, Vietnames.
